Plan 2: furniture width plus 10 to 15 cm margin on each side, same height on both sides. Plan 3: spacing measured from the bottom corner of one frame to the top corner of the next. Plan 5: the line covers 60 to 75% of the sofa or bed width, the bottom of the frames 15 to 20 cm above the backrest. First wall: plan 1 or 5, just one measurement to repeat.
Spacing between frames and center height
Grid, line or pair (plans 1, 5, 6): 5 to 8 cm, the same value everywhere. Below 4 cm, frames look stuck together; beyond 10 cm, the arrangement no longer reads as a single block. Organic or cross (plans 4, 7): 4 to 10 cm between pairs, maintaining visible consistency once the templates are taped.
The visual center of the arrangement is placed at 1.55-1.60 m from the ground, eye level when standing, except when furniture dictates otherwise: exceptions in at what height to hang a painting or poster.
Test the plan with paper templates
- Cut one template from kraft paper or newspaper per poster, at the size dimensions (30×42, 42×60 or 60×84 cm, plus molding if you frame).
- Arrange on the ground in the room, spacing included.
- Tape to the wall with masking tape, starting from the center frame or the 1.55-1.60 m mark.
- Step back 2-3 m: spacing that looks right up close often looks wrong at distance.
- Hang through the paper: mark the hanging point, drill, remove the template. Bare poster: replace the template with the poster fitted with its adhesive strips.
With or without frame?

Can you mix M, L and XL on the same wall?
Yes, that's the foundation of plans 4 and 7: XL sizes anchor the layout, M sizes fill the gaps. For visual cohesion, keep consistent spacing between neighbors (4 to 10 cm) and use only one frame style, or none.
Do you need software to plan a frame wall?
No. The paper template taped to the wall shows the real rendering in your room, with its furniture and lighting, something no screen simulation can replace. Plan on one hour for a 9-frame arrangement.
